Last year around this time I started the Share a Stem project. Essentially, you buy a wood flower, and I give that wood flower to a stranger as a random act of kindness on September 10th, which is World Suicide Prevention Day.
Why, you ask?
Because unfortunately I know all too well what the struggle with mental health can lead to. On November 19, 2019 my beautiful Mama died by suicide, and every day I wonder if there was anything I, or anyone else could have done. I wonder if maybe she had just one more positive interaction, would it have swayed her decision? I started Share a Stem in hopes of being that one glimmer in someone’s day.
How does it work?
We have single-stem wood flowers available on both the website and the TikTok shop. Each flower is $5. That flower is then give to a stranger on World Suicide Prevention Day (9/10) as a random act of kindness. We also attach a little note on each flower with a friendly reminder like “You are Loved”, “You are Enough”, and “The World is Better with you in it” along with the US crisis hotline number (988) just incase. Proceeds will go to our local chapter of AFSP.
What are your hopes for Share a Stem?
My goal is to reach as many people as possible. Whether it’s someone who’s lost a loved one to suicide, or has struggled themselves and wants to donate, or someone that receives a random flower and smiles. If I could make a teeny tiny positive difference in someone’s day, why wouldn’t I?
